Collin's Eye Update

In case you havn't heard, we had a scare with Collin's eye this past week.

Just to recap what's going on, we noticed something strange in a picture with Collin's left eye about a month ago. It was showing a white pupil instead of the normal 'black-eye' or 'red-eye' you should get with flash photography. We didn't think much of it. However, last weekend, we noticed it again with the exact same eye. We saw an optometrist last Monday and he suggested we see a pediatric opthamologist because he was concerned that he could have retinoblastoma, a rare childhood cancer where a tumor sits on the retina. Often the first sign of retinoblastoma that is noticed is leukocoria, a whitening of the pupil that looks like a "cat's eye", so we were very concerned. We went to Children's Hospital this morning and saw the doctor. He dialated his eyes and did an extensive evaluation. We are happy to report that Collin has completely healthy eyes!! He says the leukocoria was just occuring due to the flash bouncing off his optic nerve and not a tumor. In rare cases, some children who had leukocoria in just one eye in a photograph end up having totally normal eyes. We fall into this category! Praise God! The doctor said they usually only diagnose 1-2 cases a year of the retinoblastoma. I told him that odds don't mean anything to us because we usually hit those odds!! He just laughed and said this time, the odds were in our favor!! Our prayers were answered!
